Net metering for customer-owned renewable generation (investor-owned utilities)
How much you can get
Not a rebate: solar output offsets on-site use at the retail rate, and excess energy is banked as kWh credits for up to 12 months. Unused credits at the end of the calendar year are paid or credited at the utility's average COG-1 as-available energy rate. The IOU installs the net meter at no extra cost.
The details
- Run by
- Florida Public Service Commission (Rule 25-6.065, F.A.C.)
- For customers of
- Florida Power & Light Company, Duke Energy Florida, Tampa Electric Company, Florida Public Utilities Company
- Eligibility
- Customers of Florida's investor-owned utilities (FPL, Duke Energy Florida, Tampa Electric, Florida Public Utilities) with customer-owned renewable generation; apply and sign an interconnection agreement before installing. Stand-alone batteries are not renewable generation and are not net metered (FPL guidelines). FPL's FAQ and tariff describe the year-end treatment differently (bill credit vs payment).
